You’re probably familiar with what a DBS Check is, but there is specific criteria that an applicant has to meet for a successful Enhanced DBS certificate. The Disclosure and Barring Service Check allows employers to determine the credibility of prospective employees, or in some cases volunteers, but there are varying levels of detail these checks will disclose. The three levels of DBS Checks available to employers differ in terms of the extent of disclosure, and the information that is being examined. In which instances would an Enhanced DBS Check, i.e. the most in-depth one, be required, and what would be disclosed?
What are Enhanced DBS Checks Used for?
Employers recruiting for positions that are included in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, as well as anyone being “prescribed” in regulations made under s113B, Part V of the Police Act 1997 can request Enhanced Checks.
An Enhanced DBS Check for individuals includes information regarding any spent, and unspent, convictions held on the PNC (Police National Computer) which are not eligible for filtering. This will disclose:
- The date of conviction
- The details of offence committed
- The date of offence
- The details of the court in which you appeared
- The details of the sentence/disposal
The Enhanced check also includes any relevant information that is stored on local police records.
The check also ensures that each applicant is not listed on the Children’s Barred List or the DBS Adults Barred List.
Which Jobs Require an Enhanced DBS Check?
There are several jobs which require a successful Enhanced DBS certificate. If you are applying for a job which involves regular work with vulnerable adults or children, you will need a check completed. Your employer (or potential employer) will outline whether a check is needed, and if applicable, the level of check required.
The employer is responsible for ensuring the role you are applying for complies with the appropriate DBS check criteria.
Enhanced DBS Checks are required for:
- Social workers
- Nurses & midwives
- Medical practitioners (such as nursery staff)
- Sports referees (if the role will involve working with Under 18s)
- Foster carers
- Roles in schools, care/children’s homes or hospitals
- Ambulance service
